Course Description
An introduction to classical, transmission, biochemical, molecular, and population genetics is presented. A strong emphasis is placed on those aspects of genetics which relate to human health,to current social issues, and to space biology. Laboratory work will include the study of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic genetics. The lab will emphasize short-term (2-3 week) projects using a hands-on learning approach. Students are expected to prepare and setup for each experiment. Students will work in groups of three each. Lab attendance is mandatory. Lab manuals are required. Students will not be admitted to the lab with out their lab manual which can be purchased from the campus print shop. The submission of two formal laboratory reports are required (single or co-authored). The first report due the first mid-term session and a second report due the second mid-term session. Students enrolled in the course who were admitted to the college prior to the Fall 2005 semester are also required to complete their senior paper requirement as part of this course.
